Norfolk: Swafield

William White's History, Gazetteer, and Directory of Norfolk 1845

SWAFIELD, near the source of the river Ant, 2 miles N. of North Walsham, has in its parish 167 souls, and 817 acres of land, belonging to a number of proprietors, some of whom have neat houses here. About 200 acres belong to the Clergymen's Widows' Fund.

The Church (St. Nicholas,) stands on a lofty eminence, and has an embattled tower, and some remains of a beautiful screen. The living is a discharged rectory valued in the King's Book at £6, in the gift of the Queen, as Duchess of Lancaster, and incumbency of the Rev. John Colman. The tithes were commuted in 1842 for £220 per annum. The Church Land is 2½ acres.
