THURLTON, a pleasant village and parish, about 4 miles E. of Loddon and 6 N. of Beccles, is in Loddon and Clavering union and petty sessional division, Clavering hundred, Beccles county court district, Yarmouth bankruptcy district, Toft Monks polling district of South Norfolk, East Brooke rural deanery, and Norfolk archdeaconry. It had 419 inhabitants in 1881, and comprises 1170 acres. Its rateable value is £2270.
Half of the parish is marsh, near the Waveney and the Norwich and Lowestoft Navigation. Jonathan Farrow, Esq., is lord of the manor, to whom the greater part of the soil belongs. The remaining part belongs to Mr. J.E. Sayer, and the University of Cambridge chiefly. The manor extends into Thorpe and Haddiscoe, and the fines are arbitrary. The Hall estate belong [sic] to Cambridge University, and the rents are attached to the professorship of geology.
The CHURCH (All Saints) is a thatched building, comprising nave, chancel, north porch, and square embattled tower with five bells. It was thoroughly repaired, and new windows, roof, and handsome seats placed therein in 1859, when the chancel was restored at the expense of the rector. The south doorway and the north porch and doorway are handsome specimens of Norman architecture, but the side windows are Perpendicular. The beautiful screen still remains, and here are some old and curious monuments of the Denny family.
The living is a discharged rectory, valued in the King's Book at £6 13s. 4d. It is in the patronage of the trustees of the Great Hospital, Norwich, and in the incumbency of the Rev. Frederick George Goodwin, M.A., who has a commodious white brick residence, built in 1847. The glebe is 23 acres, and the tithes have been commuted for £211 per annum.
THURLTON SCHOOL BOARD was established in 1875, and consists of the Rev. F.G. Goodwin (chairman), and Messrs. John Sayer (vice-chairman), Robert Brabben, Edward Shardalow, and Rev. D.B. Morley. The School was erected in 1876, at a cost of £1000, and will accommodate 72 children.
The Wesleyans have a chapel in the parish. Several flint celts have been found here. Various pieces of Church Land were exchanged at the enclosure, in 1814, for 3A. 1R. 26P., let for £10 10s. a year.
