THWAITE, in a picturesque dell, 12 miles S.S.E. of Norwich, is a parish in Loddon and Clavering union and petty sessional division, Loddon hundred, Beccles county court district, Yarmouth bankruptcy district, Loddon polling district of South Norfolk, East Brooke rural deanery, and Norfolk archdeaconry. The rateable value is £1139. It had 120 inhabitants in 1881, and comprises 667 acres of land, lying in several manors, and belonging to the trustees of Sir W.F.F. Middleton, Bart., the Rev. W.F. Thursby, P.L. Bedingfield, Esq., and a few smaller owners.

The CHURCH (St. Mary) was partly rebuilt of brick in 1738, and is a small building, comprising nave, chancel, and square tower with two bells. It is chiefly of Early English architecture, but the south doorway is a fine specimen of the Norman style. The east window is filled with painted glass in memory of Mrs. Dreyer, wife of the late rector, and her sister, Mrs. Glover. The Register dates from 1538. The building was restored and reseated in 1875 by the present rector and friends at a cost of £200.

The rectory, valued in the King's Book at £4, is in the patronage and incumbency of the Rev. G.R. Brett, B.A. There are here 30 acres of glebe, and a yearly tithe rent-charge of £179, awarded in 1841. The rectory-house is a brick Elizabethan building, and was erected by the present rector in 1868, at a cost of about £900.

A Parochial School was built in 1869, at a cost of about £150, by the present rector and a grant from the National Society, to accommodate thirty children.

The parish clerk has 13s. a year left by unknown donors. In 1832 Harriet and Fanny Gamble gave 19 guineas each, the interest to be applied in keeping in repair the monuments of the Gamble and Solly families and the gravestone of Mr. Barnham, and the residue to be given to the poor.
