Settlement Certificates: 1767-1775
The "Act of Settlement" was a law passed in 1662 (in addition to earlier laws on the subject) to allocate, for the poor, which parish would provide support if needed. People moved and could gain Settlement in a different parish.
Parishes issued "Settlement Certificates" to guarantee that they would support their poor even though the people were living in another parish. Any of those issued by Tuttington (which have survived) are often found in other parish records.
These are items from a Norfolk Record Office document [with the reference PD 401/38 and microform MF943/4] containing the Settlement Certificates for 1767-1775. They can be found on printed or hand written forms which usually follow a standard layout. Here just the relevant facts have been extracted from all orders available for this parish.
Each "Order" has been laid out in the following manner although they do not always have every line filled out:-
Date | To: Parish | From: Parish of current Settlement | Names of persons covered by Certificate | Persons issuing certificate (Overseers etc.) | Witnesses | Justices of the Peace |
---|
