WHINBURGH, or Whinbergh, is a parish on the Hingham road, 3½ miles S.S.E. of East Dereham, in Mitford and Launditch union and petty sessional division, East Dereham county court district, Norwich bankruptcy district, Mitford hundred, Dereham polling district of South Norfolk, Mitford division of Hingham rural deanery, and Norfolk archdeaconry. Rateable value £2391. It had 226 inhabitants in 1881, and comprises 1242 acres of land, mostly belonging to John S. Foster, Esq., and Major Marcon. On the land called Manor Yards, the foundations of a large mansion and a double moat are still visible. In 1277, Lord Bardolph claimed here view of frank-pledge, a weekly market, and an annual fair.

The CHURCH (St. Mary) is a small structure in the Early English style. It consists of nave and chancel, with a square tower containing two bells, on the south side over the porch. It is fitted with carved open benches with poppies. Two stained windows in the chancel were inserted in remembrance of the Rev. William Grigson, M.A., late rector, in 1880.

The rectory, valued in the King's Book at £6 18s. 6d., and now at £225 a year, with that of Westfield annexed, is in the patronage and incumbency of the Rev. Edward Grigson, M.A., who has here a neat brick residence partly in the Elizabethan style, built in 1864, on the site of the former rectory-house, which was totally destroyed by fire in the previous year. About 500 acres, called Whinburgh Park, pays only a yearly modus of 20s., and the tithes of the rest of the parish were commuted in 1839, for £179 12s. a year, of which £5 5s. are payable to the rector of Yaxham.

At the enclosure, in 1810, an allotment of 5 acres was awarded to the poor, who have also £2 12s. a year from Mowting's, Wood's, and Darcy's charities, and 9s. 4d. every fourth year from B. Church's charity. (See Norwich.)

WHINBURGH and WESTFIELD SCHOOL BOARD was established 1875, and consists of Messrs. J.P. Smith (chairman), Thomas Vincent (vice-chairman), William Vincent, and John Farrow. Mr. Richard Grigson, solicitor, Norwich, is clerk. The school, to accommodate 59 children, was erected in 1875, on site purchased from the rector.
