Church History

It was founded in 1772. It closed in 1874 when the "Cowper Congregational Chapel" in the Market Place opened. Marked as "Cowper Hall" on OS 25'' map of 1882. White's 1883 directory says it is used as a schoolroom now. From 1905 Map marked as Congregational Chapel. Subsequently marked on maps as Chapel until c.1958 although use is as "Cowper Church Sunday School". As of 2020 appears to be in use as a Scout Hut. Norfolk Heritage Explorer has more details. See NHER Number:13790

The Independent churches were ones in which each congregation was autonomous, upholding the principles of independence. In the 19th century they became known as Congregational.

In 1972 the Congregational church joined with the English Presbyterian church to become the United Reformed Church. Some Congregational churches though did not take this path and became members of the Congregational Federation.
