"THURNE (or Thirne), an ancient ecclesiastical parish and now a civil, and ASHBY with OBY, two ecclesiastical parishes, but forming one civil parish, were consolidated as one ecclesiastical parish in 1604. They are in Flegg incorporation, Great Yarmouth county court district and bankruptcy district, East and West Flegg petty sessional division, West Flegg hundred, Ormesby polling district of North Norfolk, Flegg rural deanery, and Norwich archdeaconry. They had 220 inhabitants in 1881, living on 2068 acres of land, and had a rateable value of £2565, and a gross estimated rental of £2724. The parish is situated at the north-western corner of West Flegg hundred and Thurne village, on a declivity near the confluence of the rivers Thurne and Bure, 11 miles north-west of Yarmouth. ASHBY is now only one farm, occupied by John Wiseman, Esq., who is lord of the manor of Ashby-with-Oby, 1 mile E. of Thurne. OBY, or Ouby, contains the rectory-house, 1 mile E. of Thurne. There was formerly a church at Oby. The churchyard still remains. . . . Thomas Wyndham Cremer, Esq., J.P., of Beeston Regis, is lord of the manor of Oby and Thurne, which was anciently held by the Clippesbys. The other principal landowners are W.S. Millard and J. Christmas, Esqs., the Rev. H.J. Muskett, and the trustees of the Harmer family. The manor house is on the site of an ancient mansion, . . . now occupied by Mrs. J.W.G. Wiseman. The principal landowners of Thurne are Samuel Nightingale, Esq., and Messrs. John Wiseman and Simon Greenacre. THURNE CHURCH, dedicated to St. Edmund, stands near the village, . . . Thurne Register dates from 1559 and Oby from 1563. The rectory, valued in the King's Book at £10, and now at £700, is in the patronage of the Bishop of Norwich, and incumbency of the Rev. W. Cufaude Davie, M.A., who has a good rectory-house at Oby, . . . The glebe is 12A. 1R. 23P., and the tithes have been commuted for £690 per annum. The School was built by the Rev. H. Bolton, . . .
