"EYE, a parish in the liberty of Peterborough, county Northampton, 3 miles N.E. of Peterborough, its post town. It is situated on the N.E. border of the county, near the river Muscat. The village is considerable. The tithes were commuted for land and a money payment under the Enclosure Act of 1820. The living is a perpetual curacy* in the diocese of Peterborough, value £312, in the patronage of the bishop, who is lord of the manor. The church is a modern structure dedicated to St. Matthew. The Independents, Wesleyans, and Primitive Methodists have each a chapel, and there are National and Sunday schools. At Singlesholt in this parish were formerly a chapel and hermitage."
