"NORMANTON, a parish in the hundred of MARTINSLEY, county of RUTLAND, 5 miles (E. S. E.) from Oakham, containing 26 inhabitants. The living is a discharged rectory, in the archdeaconry of Northampton, and diocese of Peterborough, rated in the king's books at £5. 4. 7,, and in the patronage of Sir Gilbert Heathcote, Bart. The church is dedicated to St. Matthew. The river Gwash runs through the parish, in which there is a chalybeate spring strongly impregnated with steel."
