"ST. CATHERINE, a parish in the hundred of Bath Forum, in the county of Somerset, 4 miles to the N.E. of Bath, its post town. It is situated in a beautiful valley under Holt Down, and was once the seat of the abbots of Bath. A small stream, a feeder of the Avon, runs along the valley. The living is a perpetual curacy annexed to the vicarage* of Batheaston, in the diocese of Bath and Wells, in the patronage of Christ Church College, Oxford. The parochial charities are of trifling value." From The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland (1868) Transcribed by Colin Hinson © 2003
