"STOGUMBER, a parish and small market town in the hundred of Williton, county Somerset, 13 miles N.W. of Taunton, its post town, and 1 mile W. of the Stogumber station on the West Somerset railway. The town, which has only 1,000 inhabitants, is situated under the Quantock hills. The parish includes the hamlets of Capton, Halsway, Kingswood, Preston, Rexton, Yellow, and Vexford. The soil consists of loam and clay, with a subsoil of marl and stone rush. The living is a vicarage* in the diocese of Bath and Wells, value £239, in the patronage of the Dean and Chapter of Wells. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, has a tower and five bells. The parochial charities produce about £48 per annum, £15 of which go to the almshouses for poor widows. There is a National school for both sexes. The Baptists have a chapel. Sir Walter Trevelyan, Bart., and Langley St. Albyn, Esq., are lords of the manor. Market day is Saturday; but little business is now done. A cattle fair occurs on 6th May."
