THAMES-DITTON

"THAMES-DITTON, a parish in the second division of Kingston hundred, county Surrey, 2 miles W. of Kingston, its post town, and 5 E. of Walton-on-Thames. It is a station on the South-Western railway. The village is situated on the S. bank of the river Thames, and is much resorted to by anglers. The parish includes the hamlets of Weston Green, Gigg's Hill, and Ditton-Marsh. In the vicinity are numerous market gardens and a brewery. The village of Long Ditton adjoins this parish.

The living is a perpetual curacy* in the diocese of Winchester, value £290, in the patronage of King's College, Cambridge. The church was formerly a chapel-of-ease to Kingston, but was made parochial in 1769. It is dedicated to St. Nicholas, and the interior contains several brasses and tablets. The register dates from 1663. The parochial charities produce about £90 per annum, of which £35 go to Bridge's and Hill's almshouses.

There are National and infant schools. The Independents have a chapel. W. D. Speer, Esq., is lord of the manor of Weston, and the Earl of Lovelace of Claygate manor."

"CLAYGATE, a manor in the parish of Thames-Ditton, in the second division of the hundred of Kingston, in the county of Surrey, 3 miles S.W. of the Kingston station of the London and South-Western railway, and 6 N.E. of Leatherhead.

The living is a perpetual car.* in the diocese of Winchester, value £75, in the patronage of the trustees. The church, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, is a neat modern structure. Here is a National school. The Earl of Lovelace is lord of the manor, and he and the King of the Belgians are the chief landowners."

"EMBER AND WESTON, a hamlet in the parish of Thames Ditton, second division of the hundred of Elmbridge, county Surrey, 2 miles S. of Kingston. It is situated on the river Mole. The South-Western railway passes in the neighbourhood. Ember Court is the principal residence."
