"TOOTING-GRAVENEY, a parish and post town in the W. division of Brixton hundred, county Surrey, 7 miles S.W. from London. It is situated on the road from London to Brighton, through Reigate, and near the valley of the Wandle and the South-Western railway. It is mentioned in Domesday book. The village consists of two parts, viz:, Tooting Proper and Upper Tooting. In the vicinity are some extensive nursery-grounds, and a common of about 50 acres. It has a police station of the 'V' division."
