WALTON-UPON-THAMES

"WALTON-UPON-THAMES, a parish in the first division of Elmbridge hundred, county Surrey, 4 miles W. of Hampton Court, 3 N.W. of Esher, and 17 S.W. of London. It is a station on the South-Western railway. The village is situated on the banks of the Thames, near the bridge of 15 arches, the centre of which fell in 1859." "COMMON SIDE, a hamlet in the parish of Walton upon Thames, in the first division of the hundred of Elmbridge, in the county of Surrey."

"HERSHAM, (or Heversham), a hamlet in the parish of Walton upon Thames, first division of the hundred of Elmbridge, county Surrey, 5 miles S.W. of Kingston, and 1 mile from the Walton station on the London and South-Western railway. The village is situated on the river Mole.

The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Winchester, value £100. The church, erected in 1839, has a gable turret containing one bell, and is dedicated to the Holy Trinity. The Independents have a chapel, and there is a National school for both sexes. In Oatlands Park is the new district church of St. Mary's, erected in 1862, with a belfry containing one bell. Near to this church is the Metropolitan Convalescent Asylum, erected on five acres of land presented by the late Earl of Ellesmere. It is a large building with upwards of 200 beds, and further accommodation is afforded by the recent erection of a new wing. This excellent institution is supported by voluntary contributions.

"PAINSHILL, a park in the second division of the hundred of Copthorne, in the parish of Walton-Upon-Thames, county Surrey, 4 miles N.W. of Leatherhead, and 14 N.E. of Guildford. It is situated about 3 miles from the 14th arched bridge over the river Mole, and was the seat of the late Earl of Carhampton. The grounds were laid out by the Hon. C. Hamilton, and include a forest of pines."
