WEYBRIDGE

"WEYBRIDGE, a parish and large village in the first division of Elmbridge hundred, county Surrey, 3 miles S.E. of Chertsey, 5 N.W. of Esher, and 19 S.W. of London by the South-Western railway, on which it is a station. The parish is bounded on the N. by the Thames, which is here joined by the Wey and Basingstoke canal and the river Wey, across which last is an ancient bridge. " (There is more of this description).

"OATLANDS PARK, a demesne in the second division of the hundred of Godley, in the parish of Weybridge, county Surrey, 3 miles S.E. of Chertsey, and 12 N. by E. of Guildford. It is situated on the bank of the Thames, near the river Wey navigation. Henry VIII. made it his favourite seat; and it continued to be a royal residence for about a century, being frequently visited by Elizabeth, Queen Anne of Denmark, and Henrietta Maria, wife of Charles I., whose first baby, Prince Henry, was born here, and in consequence was frequently styled Henry of Oatlands. It subsequently became the property of the Herbert family, and was much improved by the celebrated Duke of Newcastle, who constructed the grotto at a cost of £40,000. Having been much damaged by fire in 1793, the house was rebuilt by the Duke of York, and was recently purchased by B. Hughes, Esq. The park and grounds have been much curtailed, and are now let in building plots."
