WOTTON

"WOTTON, a parish in the hundred of the same name, county Surrey, 3 miles S.W. of Dorking. It is situated on the border of Sussex, and is about 9 miles in extent from N. to S., but seldom exceeds a mile in breadth, tapering towards the S. It comprises the divisions of Low Hill and Up Hill, and until recently the chapelry of Oakwood, which last has been formed with part of the parish of Abinger into a separate ecclesiastical district, having its own church, and schools." "OAKWOOD, a chapelry in the parish of Wotton, and first division of the hundred of Wotton, county Surrey, 6 miles S.W. of Dorking, its post town. There is no village, only a few farmhouses. It is situated on a branch of the river Wey, near Wotton Park, where John Evelyn, the author of "Sylvia," was born in 1620.

The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Winchester, value £322. The church, dedicated to St. John, contains a brass of one of the Delahale family, bearing date 1431."
