APPLEDRAM is a small parish, in the Western division of the county, Box and Stockbridge hundred, rape, county court district, diocese and archdeaconry of Chichester, West Hampnett union, and rural deanery of Boxgrove. It is bounded on the west by the eastern branch of Chichester harbour, on the north by Fishbourne, on the east by Donnington, and on the south by Birdham: the village is a mile and a half south-west from Chichester. At Dell Quay is the principal depot for landing goods intended to supply the city of Chichester, but rendered of less importance since the establishment of the Arundel and Portmouth Canal and the opening of the South Coast Railway; the quay belongs to the corporation of Chichester. The living is a perpetual curacy, valued at £64 per annum, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Chichester, and held by the Rev. Robert Augustine Luke Nunns, M.A. of Christ's College Cambridge. The owners of the soil are G. Barttelott and Charles Crosbie, Esqrs. The soil is favourable for the growth of wheat. The area is 1,197 acres, and the population in 1861 was 129. [Kelly's Post Office Directory of Essex, Herts, Middlesex, Kent, Surrey and Sussex, 1867.]
