Etchingham

ETCHINGHAM (or Echingham) is a parish, and railway station on the Hastings branch, in the Eastern division of the county, hundred of Henhurst, Ticehurst union, Hastings rape and county court district, diocese of Chichester, and archdeaconry of Lewes, 59 miles from London, 6 and three-quarters southeast from Wadhurst. The church is partly in the Decorated and partly in the Later English style, with a central tower, and contains some tombs of the Echinghams. The register dates from the year 1561. The living is a rectory, value £613 per annum, with 18 acres of glebe land, in the gift of the heirs of the late William Whittaker Cleulow, Esq., and held by the Rev. Robert Gillbe Barton, M.A., of Corpus College, Cambridge. This parish gave name to the baronial family of the Echinghams, hereditary seneschals of the rape of Hastings, many of whom are buried here and some at Battle. The Earl of Chichester is lord of the manor. The area of the parish is 3,750 acres, assessed at £2,400. In 1861 the population was 864.
HURST GREEN is a hamlet, partly in Salehurst parish and partly in Etchingham parish, Ticehurst union, rape, and partly in the county court district of Hastings, East Sussex, 47 miles from London and 7 north from Battle.
