Ewhurst

EWHURST is a parish, in the Eastern division of the county, Battle union, hundred of Staple, rape and county court district of Hastings, diocese of Chichester, archdeaconry of Lewes, and rural deanery of Dallington, 4 miles east from Robertsbridge, 6 south from Hurst Green, 13 south-east from Lamberhurst, and 66 from London, bounded on the north by the river Rother, and on the east by the county of Kent. The church of St. James is partly in the Early and partly in the Decorated English styles: the chancel has been recently restored: the font, which is square, on a circular column, is of Sussex marble. Date of register, 1570. The living is a rectory, in the gift of the Provost and Fellows of King's College, Cambridge; the tithes have been commuted for a rent-charge of £725, and there are 35 acres of glebe, with residence; the Rev. George John Boudier, M.A., of King's College, Cambridge, is the rector. At Staple Cross is a place of worship for Wesleyans. The parish is in two manors Robertsbridge and Ewhurst. Edward Allfrey, Esq., is lord of the former and Thomas Smith Pix, Esq., lord of the latter. The village is pleasantly situated on rising ground, commanding a fine view of the adjoining country. A fair is held on August 5th for cattle, pedlery, and hops. The area is 5,719 acres, and the population in 1861 was 1,043.
