PORTSLADE is a pleasant picturesque village and parish, 53½ miles south from London, 4 north-west from and in the county court district of, Brighton, and 3 north-east from Shoreham, at the foot of the southern slope of the South Downs, about one mile from the sea, in the Eastern division of the county, hundred of Fishergate, Lewes rape and archdeaconry, Steyning union, and diocese of Chichester. The church is named St. Nicholas. The living is a vicarage, united with Hangleton: the vicarial tithes are commuted at £142 per annum, with 50 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Earl De Le Warr, and held by the Rev. Frederick George Holbrooke, M.A. The rectorial tithes are commuted at £260 per annum. The principal landowners are the Rev. William Hall and Edward Blaker, Esq. The Manor House, Portslade House, and East Hill are mansions commanding extensive views over sea and land. The portion of Portslade called COPPERAS GAP is situated on the Brighton and Shoreham road, 3 miles west from Brighton, near the Portslade railway station on the South Coast line. The buildings and population have much increased, in consequence of the formation of a canal and floating basin (in connection with Shoreham harbour) for the convenience of the coal and general trade of Brighton and its neighbourhood. Here is a district church, St Andrew; patron, the Bishop of Chichester; incumbent, the Rev. J.J. Ellis. The area is 2,006 acres, and the population in 1861 was 1,103.
