UPPER BEEDING is a parish 53 miles south from London, about half a mile south-east from Bramber railway station, a mile and a half from Steyning, and 4 miles north from Shoreham, on the river Adur (which is navigable for small vessels), in the Western division of the county, Burbench hundred, rape of Bramber, Steyning union, diocese of Chichester, archdeaconry of Lewes, and county court district of Brighton. The church of St. Peter has nave, chancel, and south aisle, and Norman tower with 3 bells. The register dates from 1544. The living is a vicarage, value £10 only, with 11 small cottage and garden, in the gift of Magdelen College, Oxford, to whom the tithe rent charge belongs, commutation of which is £650 and held by the Rev. John Rouse Bloxam, D.D, of that college. There is a Church school. The principal landowners are H. C. Bridger, Esq., John Penfold, Esq., Sir Percy Burrell, Bart., Lord Leconfield, the representatives of the late Col, Clitheroe, and the Rev. John Goring. The ruins of Bramber castle stand at a short distance from this village, and the road from Steyning to Shoreham passes through it. The population in 1861 was 553; area. 3,847 acres.
