Westfield

WESTFIELD is a parish, 5½ miles east from Battle, where there is a railway station, 71 from London, and 5 north fromHastings, in the Eastern division of the county, Baldslow hundred, Hastings rape and county court district, Battle union,diocese of Chichester, archdeaconry of Lewes, and rural deanery of Dallington. The church is ancient structure, consisting of nave, aisle, and chancel, and tower with 3 bells, and has lately been restored and re-pewed, at an expense of nearly £1,000. The parish register dates from about 1550. The living is a vicarage, value £372 per annum. with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Chichester, and held by the Rev. Mark Henry Vernon, M.A., of Trinity College, Cambridge. The Bishop of Winchester is owner of the great tithes. Iron ore was formerly found and smelted here, and in the adjoining parishes, to a great extent. Charles A. Frewin, Esq., and R. B. and B. S. Follett, Esqrs. are the largest landowners. Oaklands, in this parish, is the residence of Hercules Brabazon Brabazon, Esq., J.P. The parish comprises 4,272 acres, and had a population of 900 in 1861.
