St Matthew's ecclesiastical parish was formed on 11th February 1881 from part of St Paul's parish. The church, in Dudley Road, was erected in 1876.

Church History

The parish church of St Matthew, designed by JH Gibbons, is an edifice of red brick, in the Early English style, consisting of a chancel, nave, north porch and a western tower with pinnacles.
Three stained glass windows in the chancel were installed in 1900 in memory of James Hooker Smith, a churchwarden for 13 years, and a further two erected in 1921 are in memory of the Rev RS Keitch, who was the first vicar of the parish from 1880 to 1913. A Holy Table was given in memory of the Rev David Rhys James, vicar from 1913 to 1935, by his son and daughters in 1937, and the memorial screen dividing the chancel and nave is in memory of his wife.
The living is a vicarage, in the gift of Simeon's Trustees.
