"St Matthew's Church, at the end of Walsall Street, is a neat stone building of Early English architecture, built in 1849. The handsome font, of Caen stone, the stained glass, altar furniture, etc, were presented by several donors. The east window is beautifully enriched with stained glass.
The living is a vicarage, in the alternate patronage of the Crown and the Bishop of Lichfield, and incumbency of the Rev AP Luscombe, BA."

The ecclesiastical parish of St Matthew was formed on 24th March 1846.
The church, situated in Lower Horseley Fields, at its junction with Lower Walsall Street, was consecrated in 1849.
St Matthew's church was built of stone, in the Early English style, from designs by Mr E Banks, and consisted of a chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, north and south porches, and a turret containing one bell.
St Matthew's was demolished in 1964 and a new church was built in East Park Way.
St Silas Mission Church, Monmore Green, was erected in this parish in 1897.
