  * Mr. Bellasis visited Shap 8 Aug., 1876. The Rev. S. Whiteside has most
generously gone over his MS. 13 years later, made some corrections, and
added all the inscriptions recorded since 1876, for which great kindness Mr.
Bellasis tenders his thankful acknowledgements. Of the following fragmentary
inscrip- tions nothing further has been ascertained. 1- " To . . . Jane and
Margaret, son and da., aged 3. . .1746." 2 - "Here lieth the Body of T. . .
. of S . . . . Lastly a tomb was noted displaying the matrix of a brass. 3 -
" Here lies interr'd the body of Richard son of Richard . . . and . . ."

  " In: E. window are Clifford & Rosgill arms &c. (i.e. ar. fretty gu). I
think Bp. Nicolson is wrong in calling these arms the arms of Rosgill, they
appear to me those of Salkeld of Rosgill Hall." Machell MSS; III. Mr. Hill.
Bp. Nic. Vis. 1703 calls them Salkeld of Rosgill. Ar fretty gu. with a chief
of the last would be a Salkeld coat. E.B.
CLOSE, SEWELL.
  (S.)  In m. John Close of Shap, yeoman, who d. August 16th 1812 aged 77 y.
Also of Jane Close his wife, who d. May 9th 1827 aged 94 y. Let me die the
death of the rightious & let my last end be like his, Numb. xxiii, 10. This
monument is erected to m. John & Jane Close by their Grandson William Sewell
of Trelawny in the Island of Jamaica, West Indies in r. their affectionate
kindness to him when a boy, July 1855.

  (N.)  S. m. George Ditchfield, Storekeeper on the Lancaster & Carlisle Ry.
who d. l. on the 9th of April 1847 aged 32. He hath left a Widow & three
small Children to mourn the loss of a loving Husband & Parent. His
affectionate Brother as a tribute to his memory has caused this Stone to be
erected.

progress of the Works on the Shap District of the Lancaster & Carlisle
Railway, & whose names are to be found in the Parish Register Books.

HINDSON, COOPER.
(S.E.) As affectionate tribute this memorial stone was erected January 1870
to perpetuate the remembrance of the Hindson family, natives of this county,
but who settled in this parish in the y. 1832, & whose remains lie here,
resting in hope of a glorious resurrection unto eternal life, viz. Jona.
Hindson & Mary his wife. Also Wm. Hindson their son & Elizabeth his wife &
their descendants viz Jane the beloved wife of Thos. Hindson who was b. at
Lazonby & who d, at Rosgill Hall May 9th 1855. Also one of his sisters Jane
wife of Thomas Cooper, late of Hegdale. Four of the children of Thos:
& Jane Hindson, d. in infancy & Mary Ann their youngest was taken to an
early rest Nov. 2nd 1869 aged 23 y. leaving many who sincerely & truly mourn
her loss, four of her brothers & two sisters surviving her.

who d. at Bowness the 28th day of June 1857 aged 64 y. This tablet was
erected by a few of his friends & parishioners.

d. July 23rd 1877 aged 45.

  S. M. Near this place lie the remains of Margaret Wife of Jonathan Scott
of Swindale who d. l. Jan. 1st 1791 aged 67 y. She was a dutiful Wife, an
affectionate Parent, and a sincere Christian. Also here lieth the Body of
the above-named Jonathan Scott who d. at Burneside near Kendal May 19th 1806
in the 86 y. of his age. Also Jonathan Scott, Esq., of Watermillock, their
son who. d. January 31st l838 in the 86 y. of his age.

20 y. incumbent of Swindale who d. Feby. 20th 1870 aged 73y.
