REDMARLEY-D'ABITOT - Extract from National Gazetteer, 1868

"REDMARLEY-D'ABITOT, a parish in the lower division of Oswaldslow hundred, county Worcester, 5 miles N.E. of Newent, its post town, and 5 S.E. of Ledbury. The village is situated on the road from Gloucester to Ledbury, and is chiefly agricultural. In the front of the parish, which is hilly, the soil is light; but in the level portion it is clay. There are several quarries of red sandstone, chiefly used for repair of the roads. The tithes have been commuted for a rent-charge of £915, and the glebe comprises 63 acres.

The living is a rectory* [the asterisk denotes that there is a parsonage and glebe belonging to the living] in the diocese of Worcester, value £900. The church, dedicated to St. Bartholomew, has a tower containing six bells. It was partially rebuilt in 1856. The register dates from 1542. The parochial charities produce about £14 per annum. There is a National school. The Wesleyans have a place of worship. Down House is the principal residence. Earl Beauchamp is lord of the manor."
