Data from the 'Collectio Rerum Ecclesiasticarum' from the year 1842.

The place: NETHER POPPLETON.     Church dedication: PATRON SAINT NOT KNOWN.     Church type: Perpetual Curacy.

Area, 1,150 acres. Ainsty. - Population, 259 *1; Church-room, 150; Net value, £155. -This Church was appropriated to the Abbey of St Mary, to which it was given by Osbert de Arches. Ecton and Bacon term it a Vicarage, but no ordination can be found, and it is held as a Curacy. In 1611, 1662, and 1665, it was held as a Vicarage.

The following Report is given by the Parliamentary Commissioners :-"A Vicarage, 20 marks per annum. Daniel Sherard, a constant preacher, of civil conversation, is Vicar there. We find that the town of Nether Poppleton and twelve houses in Over Poppleton are only belonging to the said parish of Nether Poppleton and the said Rectory of Nether Poppleton, and the said twelve houses is appropriate, being of the value of £100 per annum, viz.: a moiety to the Bishop, and the other to the Dean and Chapter of York. The Bishop's moiety is leased for three lives, at £8 per annum ; the other, at £10 per annum, by the said Dean and Chapter. The rest of Over Poppleton, other than the said twelve houses, is in the parish of Bishophill the Younger, in the city of York, but three miles distant thence; and there hath formerly been a Chapel in Over Poppleton, but now decayed, to which belongeth neither minister nor maintenance. Now, in regard both the said Poppletons are near situate the one to the other, we think fit that both Poppletons be made one parish ; that that part of Over Poppleton, in the said parish of Bishophill the Younger, be divided thence, and annexed to Nether Poppleton, and the said Chapel to be clean demolished, and Nether Poppleton Church to be the parish Church for both parishes." Vol. xviii. page 555.

Torre gives the particulars of the composition between the Chapter of York and the Abbot of St. Mary's for dividing the lands of both Poppletons.

Archbishop Sharp says (MS., vol. i. page 70) this Church is now accounted a Vicarage, but is served by a stipendiary Curate, and is not charged with Tenths or Procurations.

The Archbishop of York is the patron, to whom the patronage was given by Henry VIII. at the Dissolution.

Value, in the King's books, £23.

Archbishop Sterne made an augmentation of £8 per annum.

Augmented, in 1829, with £200, £200, £200, £200, and £200, to meet benefaction of house, offices, and land, worth £1,200, from Richard Fountayne Wilson, Esq., M.P.

27th July 1797, a faculty was granted to take down an old barn belonging to the living, and apply the materials towards the reparation of a messuage or tenement also belonging to the living.

The glebe house, in 1818, was not fit for residence, on account of the premises being very confined. There is now a good house.
