THE POST OFFICE:
  • In consequence of recent alterations, the London, Hull, Whitby, Scarbro', and Liverpool Mails arrive here so as to admit of a delivery, at the window, of letters and newspapers (brought by those mails) in the evening, as soon as possible after the departure of the mail to the North, which delivery continues until ten o'clock, at which hour the Receiving Box is closed for all parts of the kingdom, hut letters are taken in at the window until eleven, by payment of one penny each. It is, however, necessary that all letters intended to be forwarded by the Edinbro' and Shields mails, or the Boroughbridge and Wetherby posts of the same night, should be put into the office before seven o'clock. The office opens every morning at eight o'clock for the delivery of letters, and the letter carriers are dispatched into the city at nine.
