In loving memory
of
my dear mother
MARY HARRIET MÖWIS.
Who Departed this Life
July 13th 1911

Also of my dear father
PAUL EMIL CARL MÖWIS,
of India
died June 9th 1915
(remainder obscured)

Paul was born about 1842, in Berlin, the son of Karl Möwis. In 1866, while
resident in Scarborough, he married Mary Harriet Higginbotham, at Christ
Church, Bridlington. He lived in India from about 1872. He is buried in
Darjeeling.

Paul was an authority on Indian butterflies, and had papers published in
scientific journals. He made three expeditions into Tibet, where he collected
ethnographic artefacts, some of which are now in the Weltmuseum, Vienna.
There is some information about his life in India in Wilhelm
Habbe-Schleiden's Indian Journal 1894-1896.

Paul and Mary's daughter, Amy Annie Elizabeth Möwis, married Fred Walkington
in 1896, at Holy Trinty Church, Bridlington.
