55. ST. JAMES SQUARE, LISTER STREET. St. James's Anglican church. This church, consecrated in 1831, was built as a chapel-of-ease to Holy Trinity to serve the expanding population in the area of Hull, south of Hessle Road, known as the Potteries. The church was only assigned its own district in 1874. Designed by J.A. Hansom (of Hansom cab fame) and E. Welch, the church was a Commissioners' Church its building being financed partly by government money and partly by Hull Corporation. White Wallingfen stock bricks with stone dressings in Early English style. It had seating for 1000. Major alterations were made to the interior in 1866, 1871 and finally in 1931 when the galleries were removed. The church was closed in the mid 1950s and demolished in 1957. The site is now a garden.
