The place:

A post and parish town, in the wapentake of Buckrose; 8 miles from Driffield, 12 from Malton, 14 from Pocklington, 17 from Bridlington, 20 from Scarborough, 21 from York, 226 from London. Population, including Croom 425. The Church is a perpetual curacy, dedicated to St. Mary, in the deanery of Buckrose.
