The List of Rectors in St. Helen's Church, Wheldrake.
carucates make a Knight's fee, and pay rent per annum of two shillings.
The Abbot of Fountains held the same town of Richard Malebys
and he of the Heirs of Percy and they of the King in capite
The Church of S Elene of Qweldryk was given to the Priory of Wartre
and was a long time in their possession till 24 October 1268 when
John Queldrake, Prior and Convent thereof, having the patronages of
these three churches viz : Lund, Nunburnholme and Qweldrake
which they submitted to Walter Giffard, Archbishop of York, who
asking them which of these three churches they would rather have,
said the Church of Lund, he immediately appropriated the same
Church of Lund unto them, and commanded them to confer on him
and his successors the patronage of the two other churches,
which they without delay, did under their common seal accordingly.
Hence it is said that the Archbishops of York have been patrons
of this Church of Wheldrake for six and a half centuries.
In 1268 it was of the value of 40 marks.
The registers commence in 1603. The tower of the church
dates from the twelfth century
