ARKENGARTHDALE:
Geographical and Historical information from the year 1868.

"ARKENGARTHDALE, a parish, in the western division of the wapentake of Gilling, in the North Riding of the county of York, 12 miles to the W. of Richmond. The Dale, which is about 7 miles in length, is watered by the Arkle, a branch of the river Swale. The parish includes the hamlets of Arkle, Booze, and several others. It is a moorland district, with valuable lead mines, some of which have been worked for six hundred years. The inhabitants of the village are principally engaged in the mines. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Ripon, value £123, in the patronage of Sir J. Lowther, Bart., the proprietor of the mines. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. There is a chapel belonging to the Wesleyan Methodists. A free school, for the benefit of all children of the Dale, was founded and endowed by George Brown, Esq., who held the manor. The parochial charities, including the free school, amount to £37 per annum."
