"AYSGARTH, a parish, and village in the western division of the wapentake of Hang, in the North Riding of the county of York, 3 miles to the S.E. of Askrigg. It is situated in Wensley Dale, on the banks of the river Ure, or Yore. The district abounds in striking scenery, rugged hills, chasms, torrents, and waterfalls, not without intermixture of fine pasture lands. The parish is probably the largest in England being about 25 miles in length, and comprises the chapelries of Askrigg, Hardrow, with Lunds, Hawes, and Stalling-Busk, all of which have churches of their own, and the townships of Abbotside (High and Low), Bainbridge, Bishopdale, West Burton, with several others. Coal and lead occur here in small quantities. Aysgarth Force is the finest waterfall in Yorkshire. The river Ure precipitates itself over a lofty ridge of rock, not far from the church. A single arch 70 feet in span crosses the river above the fall. From this bridge the view is very impressive, embracing several falls gleaming among the rocks and trees, and the picturesque tower of the church rising quietly above a wood. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Ripon, value £137, in the patronage of the Master and Fellows of Trinity College, Cambridge. The church is in the early English style, possesses a beautiful screen, and is dedicated to St. Andrew. There is a free grammar school at Yorebridge, founded in 1601, by Anthony Beeson, with an income from endowment of £100. The parish enjoys several other charitable endowments, amounting to above £100 per annum."
"APPERSETT, a hamlet in the chapelry of Hawes, and parish of Aysgarth, western division of the wapentake of Hang, in the North Riding of the county of York, 4 miles to the S.W. of Hawes. It is situated near the source of the river Ure, at the foot of Cam Fell, which rises to the height of above 1,900 feet."
"ASKRIGG, a market town and chapelry in the parish of Aysgarth, western division of the wapentake of Hang, in the North Riding of the county of York, 50 miles to the N.W. of York, and 246 miles from London by road, or 284 by railway. It occupies a hill on the north bank of the river Ure, near the head of Wesley Dale. The surrounding moorland district abounds in fine scenery and picturesque waterfalls. Mill Gill Force, half a mile from the town, has a fall of 60 feet, and Whitfield Force, a little higher up, has a fall of 100 feet. Newbiggin, Nappa, and Woodhall, are hamlets included in this parish The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Ripon, value £100, in the patronage of the Vicar of Aysgarth. The ancient church, which is dedicated to St. Oswald, has been recently restored. There is a chapel belonging to the Wesleyan Methodists. The free grammar school of Yorebridge was founded and endowed in the latter part of the reign of Queen Elizabeth, by Anthony Benson. It has a revenue of £65 a year. There are almshouses for six poor widows of this township and Low Abbotside, each of whom receives £10 per annum. This charity was founded by Christopher Alderson, in 1807. Thursday is the market day, and fairs are held, principally for the sale of cattle, on the 11th May, the first Thursday in June, the 11th and 12th July, and the 28th October."
"BAINBRIDGE, a township in the parish of Aysgarth, western division of the wapentake of Hang, in the North Riding of the county of York, 2 miles to the S.W. of Askrigg. It is situated in Wensley Dale, on the banks of the river Bain (a branch of the Ure), which rises in Ray Dale side and flows through Seamer Water, a beautiful lake two miles above Bainbridge, to the Ure. This place has traces of a Roman road, and is supposed to be the site of the Roman station, Bracchium."

"HARDROW, a parochial chapelry in the parish of Aysgarth, township of High Abbotside, and wapentake of West Hang, North Riding county York, 1 mile N. of Hawes, and about 16 miles W. of Leyburn railway station. It is situated on the N. bank of the river Ure or Yore, in Wensleydale, and comprises the scattered hamlets of Cotterdale, Fossdale, Hardrow, Sedbusk, Shaw, and Simonstone. Here is a fine cascade called the Hardrow Scar Waterfall, which, in the frost of 1739-40, froze into a hollow transparent column of ice, while the water continued to run through it. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Ripon, value £109, in the patronage of Lord Wharncliffe and the Vicar of Aysgarth, alternately. There is a church and a school; the latter has an endowment of £10 10s. per annum."
"HAWES, a chapelry, township, and market town, in the parish of Aysgarth, wapentake of West Hang, North Riding county York, 17 miles W. of Middleham, and 54 N.W. of York. This township, which is very extensive, comprising upwards of 16,000 acres, chiefly pasture and meadow land, is situated on the S. side of the river Ure, or Yore, in the Vale of Wensleydale. It comprises, besides the town of Hawes, the hamlets of Appersett, Burtersett, Gayle, Mossdale, Snaizeholme, Widdale, and part of Lunds. The town contains a branch bank, and over the river is a stone bridge, built in 1839, on the site of the old ford, and replacing an ancient foot bridge of wood. The principal articles of manufacture are those of knit hosiery, caps, &c., and in the vicinity are lead mines. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Ripon, value £130, in the patronage of the Vicar of Aysgarth. The church, dedicated to St. Margaret, is a stone building, lately erected, with a tower containing one bell. The Independents, Wesleyans, Primitive Methodists, and Sandemanians have chapels, and there are grammar and National schools, the former endowed with £11 per annum. At a short distance from the town is Hardrow Scaur, or Force, a cascade falling perpendicularly from a height of 90 feet. A considerable market is held on Tuesday. Fairs are held on Whit-Tuesday and on the 28th September for the sale of cattle."

It is situated near the river Ure, and comprises the hamlets of Birk-Riggs, Cam-Houses, and Litherskew. The living is a curacy in the diocese of Ripon, value £76, in the patronage of the Vicar of Aysgarth. The church is ancient."

There are several beautiful falls in its course. The township includes the hamlets of Hardraw, Cotterdale, Helbeck-Lunds, &c. The district is principally moorland."

The two townships are separated by Whitefield Gill. The hamlets of Grange, Bowbridge, Helme, and Shawcote are included in this township There are almshouses for the reception, of six poor widows. Many persons were formerly employed here in stocking knitting."
