An Account of the Pious and Charitable Gifts of the Several Benefactors of the Town of Bedale

Imprs. Mr. Richard & Mr. Thomas Young Brethren & Priests of the Romish Church Born at Bedale Gave a Hundred Pounds to Erect & Endow a small Almshouse for the maintenance of three poor Widows of the town Bedale & a parcel of Land called Scar Close laying in little Leeming in the said Parish of Bedale of about six pounds Per Annum value was purchased with the said money & the Almshouse erected And three poor widows are placed & maintained therein.

Item. Mr. John Young a Priest also of the Church of Rome Nephew to the said Richard & Thomas Born also at Bedale, Gave a Hundred Pounds To purchase a piece of Land for the putting out poor Boys of the Town of Bedale apprentices. A small Farm was purchased with the same Consisting of a house & several small parcels of Land lying in several places in Ellington in the parish of Kirby Mall side now let for Five Pounds per Annum. It would do well if both these Charitable Gifts were left to the management of the Rector & the four & twenty who take care that the Rents of the said lands were disposed of according to the Will of the Donors.

Item. Nicolas Tippin late of Hornby, Yeoman, by his last Will & Testament Gave Twenty Shillings Per Annum to the Poor of the town of Bedale A Copy of which Will is in the chest in the Vestry of this Church, but by reason of the Interest of money being much lowred since the time The Poor now get but fifteen shillings per Annum which is payed by the Earl of Holderness.

Item. Ann Raper late of Bedale, Single Woman by her last Will & Testament Gave Ten Pounds to be Put out to Interest by the Rector & the Four & twenty of this Parish, the Consideration thereof to be given yearly to the poor of the Town of Bedale for which there is a bond in the Chest in the Vestry of this Church.

Item. John Sawters a servant to Mr. William Metcalf late Rector of the Parish Gave the Sum of Ten Pounds by his last Will & Testament to be put out for the use of the poor of the Town of Bedale by the Rector & the Four & twenty of this Parish for which there is a bond in the Chest in the Vestry of this Church.

Item. Christopher Hewart late of Bedale, Yeoman, by his last Will & Testament Gave Ten Pounds to be put out to Interest by the Rector & the Four & Twenty of this Parish for the use of the poor of the Town of Bedale for which there is a bond in the Chest in the Vestry of this Church.

Item. Mr. Robert Ashton, Dr. of Physic sometimes inhabiting the Town of Bedale, Gave Five Pounds in his lifetime to be lent to Five Poor Tradesmen decayed persons of the said town every one to have twenty shillings a piece for a years time gratis which is which is so managed by the Rector & the Four & twenty of this parish. And the Bonds are every year Lodged in the Chest in the Vestry of this Church.

Item. Francis Atkinson, late of Bedale Deceased by his last Will & Testament Gave Five Pounds to be put out to Interest by the Rector & Four & Twenty for the use of the Poor of the said Town for which there is a bond in the Chest in the Vestry of this Church.

Item. Mr. Wm. Heaton a younger brother of the Family of Firby, by his last Will & Testament Gave one Hundred Pounds to the Town of Bedale for ever, to be put out to Interest by the Rector & six of the Four & twenty of the said Parish as are for the Quarter of the Town of Bedale for the time being together with his Executors, the Consideration thereof to be given to a Master who shall teach eight poor Boys of the said Town to read & write English; The Government of said School is Committed to the Rector & six of the four & twenty aforesaid with his Executors.

Item. He the said Mr. Wm. Heaton, Gave also Ten Pounds by his last Will & Testament, to be put out to Interest by his Executors for the use of poor of the Town of Bedale And the Interest to be distributed among them every Christmas Eve.

Item. Mr. Thomas Plummerof Bedale by the request of his late wife, Mother to the said Mr. Wm. Heaton, Gave other Ten Pounds in his lifetime to be put out to Interest for the use of the poor of the Town; the Consideration thereof to be distributed as the former to the said Poor every Christmas Eve.

Item. Abel Bell late of the Town of Bedale by his last Will & Testament Gave Five Pounds to be put out to Interest for the use of the Poor, of the said Town, For which there is a bond in the Chest in the Vestry of this Church.
