The place:

A parish in the wapentake of Gilling West; 1 mile from Gretabridge, 4 from Barnard Castle (Co. Durham), 13 from Richmond, 55 from York. Population 216. The Church is a vicarage, dedicated to St. Mary, in the deanery of Richmond, diocese of Chester.
