The place:

A parish in the wapentake of Hallikeld; 3½ from Bedale, 9 from Masham, 9½ miles from Ripon, 30 from York. Population 288. The Church is a vicarage, dedicated to St. Lambert, in the deanery of Catterick, diocese of Chester.
