In 1822, the following places were in
the Parish of Burneston:

"BROMAKING GRANGE, a farm house in the township of Exilby, Newton, and Leeming, and parish of Burneston; 2¼ miles NNW. of Buneston, 2 miles from Bedale."

"CARTHORPE, in the parish of Burneston, wapentake of Halikeld, and liberty of Richmondshire; ¾ mile S. of Burneston, 4½ miles SE. of Bedale. Here is a small Methodist chapel. Camphill, the elegant seat of Col. Sergeantson, is in this township, about which are many vestiges of an ancient encampment. Pop. 301."

"COWFOLD HOUSE, a farm house in the townships of Exelby, Leeming, and Newton, and parish of Burneston; 2¼ miles NNW. of Burneston, 2½ miles from Bedale."

"EXELBY, in the parish of Burneston wapentake of Halikeld and liberty of Richmondshire; 1½ miles NW. of Burneston, 2 miles ESE. of Bedale. Pop. including Leeming and Newton 562."

"GATENBY, in the parish of Burneston wapentake of Halikeld, and liberty of Richmondshire; 2 miles NNE. of Burneston, 4 miles E. of Bedale. Population. 88."

"LEEMING, in the parish of Burneston; wapentake of Halikeld, and liberty of Richmondshire; 2¾ miles NNW. of Burneston, 2 miles ENE. of Bedale. This ancient village seems to give its name to Leeming lane, which exhibits a fine specimen of the improvements made in public roads in modern times. This road is under the management of Mr. M'Adam, whose simple but efficient system consists principally in so constructing the road as to make all parts of it equally fit for carriages, and in breaking the materials small which are used in the repairs. This road was the Herman-street of the Romans, which extended northward as far Inverness. The Church is a perpetual curacy, dedicated to St. John, of which the Rev. J. Monson, A. M. is curate. Population included with Exilby and Newton."

"LEEMING BAR, a hamlet in the parish of Burneston, and the township of Gatenby. (There is no mention of Leeming Bar in the 1820s, and it appears to have been built up around the railway station). The Church is dedicated to St. Augustine."

"LONDONDERRY, in the parish of Burneston, wapentake of Halikeld, and liberty of Richmondshire (the seat of the Rev. John Raper Hunton); 1¾ miles N. of Burneston, 2½ miles E. of Bedale. Newton house, a hunting box, belonging to the Right Hon. the Earl of Darlington, is situated in this village. The above house was sold to Lord Darlington ten or twelve years ago; and in the latter end of the year 1821, a chimney belonging to it was blown down, the materials of which were precipitated through the roof, and killed a young lady in her bed. The house has since been taken down, and re-built on the site of the old one, leaving that part upon which the young lady's room stood a sort of vacuum in the middle of the house. The Countess of Darlington educates, at her own expense, twenty poor children in this township."

"NEW INN, (Leeming-Lane) in the township and parish of Burneston; 1 mile SE. of Burneston, 6 miles from Bedale, 9 from Thirsk, 10 from Ripon, 10 from Northallerton, 11 from Catterick and Boroughbridge. It is a respectable Inn and Posting-House. The Magistrates for Hallikeld hold their meetings here, and at York-Gate Inn, alternately."

"NEWTON, in the parish of Burneston, wapentake of Halikeld, and liberty of Richmondshire; 3 miles ENE. of Bedale. Population included with Exilby, 562."

"NEWTON HOUSE, (a seat of the Earl of Darlington) in the township of Exelby, Leeming, and Newton, and parish of Burneston; 3 miles from Bedale, 8 from Catterick and Northallerton, 14 from Boroughbridge."

"OAK TREE INN, (Leeming-Lane) in the township and parish of Burneston; ½ mile ESE. of Burneston, 5 miles from Bedale, 10 from Thirsk and Northallerton. -Some few years ago a good Posting-House, now only a Public-House."

"SMEARHOLMES, a single house in the parish of Burneston, wapentake of Halikeld, and liberty of Richmondshire; 1 mile NE. of Burneston, 4 miles from Bedale."

"THEAKSTON, in the parish of Burneston, wasp, of Halikeld, & liberty of Richmondshire; ½ mile NNW. of Burneston, 3 miles SE. of Bedale. Population, 87."

"THEAKSTONE GRANGE, a farm house in the township of Theakstone, and parish of Burneston; 1 mile N. of Burneston, 3½ miles from Bedale."
