The place:

A parish in the wapentake of Gilling-East; 8 miles from Northallerton and Richmond, 9 from Darlington (Co. Durham), 40 from York. Population 338. The Church is a vicarage, dedicated to St. Mary, in the deanery of Richmond, diocese of Chester.
