"BINGLEY, a parish in the upper division of the wapentake of Skyrack, in the West Riding of the county of York, 6 miles to the N.W. of Bradford, and 201 miles to the N. of London. It is a station on the North Midland railway. This parish is situated in a pleasant and well-wooded country, and comprises the township of Bingley-with-Micklethwaite, the chapelries of Morton and Cullingworth, and numerous hamlets The town consists of one long street, and stands upon rising ground between the river Aire on the west, and the Leeds and Liverpool canal on the east. Most of the houses are built of stone. The principal branches of industry are the spinning of yarn and cotton, the malt trade, and the manufacture of paper. The privilege of holding a market was conferred on the town by King John. The living is a vicarage* in the diocese of Ripon, value £233, in the patronage of the bishop. The church, a small building founded in the 12th century by William Paganell, and restored in the early part of the reign of Henry VIII., is dedicated to All Saints. Besides the parish church, there are two district churches, one at Cullingworth, and the other at Morton. The livings of both are perpetual curacies, value respectively £130 and £160, in the alternate patronage of the crown and bishop. There are chapels belonging to the Independents, Wesleyan Methodists, and Baptists. The free grammar school, founded in the 16th century, is endowed with property producing about £270 per annum. Besides the school-house, there is a residence and garden for the head-master. There is also a large National school. Almshouses for five widows were established and endowed by Sarah Rhodes in 1784, and there are some other charitable endowments. Bingley is one of the polling-places for the West Riding. In the hamlet of Riddlesden is the old seat of the Maude family, who were settled here at an early period. Tuesday is the market day. Fairs for the sale of cattle, horses, and linen are held on the 25th January, the 25th August, and two following days."

"HARDEN, a hamlet in the parish of Bingley, wapentake of Upper Skyrack, West Riding county York, 1½ mile W. of Bingley, and 30 miles W.S.W. of York. This place is situated on the road from Bingley to Wilsden and Halifax. The land is chiefly pasture and meadow, with a considerable tract of unenclosed moorland. The Harden beck, a good trout stream, runs through the hamlet, and turns several worsted mills. Here is a large rocky crag overhanging the Bell-Bark Wood, called the Druid's altar. There is a Free Methodist chapel, and a school partly endowed by the late Walker Farrand, Esq. Harden Grange is the principal seat."

"MORTON, a township in the parish of Bingley, upper division of Skyrack wapentake, West Riding county York, 2 miles N. of Bingley, its post town. It is situated on the Leeds and Liverpool canal, and contains the hamlets of East and West Morton. The inhabitants are chiefly engaged in agriculture. The village of East Morton is considerable, and occupies the sides and summit of a hill; and that of West Morton is chiefly a cluster of houses on the N. bank of the river Aire. On the banks of the Morton Beck, a stream flowing by East Morton, are several worsted, cotton, and paper mills. There are several collieries and stone quarries in the township. The living is a perpetual curacy* with the curacy of Morton-Banks annexed, in the diocese of Ripon, value £160, in the patronage of the crown and bishop alternately. The church is a modern structure, dedicated to St. Luke."
