BRADFORD VOTING REGISTERS:
Bradford Voting Registers notes

Notes on the presentation of the Bradford Voting Registers.

These Registers are presented in 7 different sections, with a total of four different formats:

1853-1867, completely alphabetical by surname for the whole of Bradford, Bowling, Horton and Manningham townships.
1868-1878, alphabetical by surname by wards for the above townships.
1881-1883, as above but wards split because of the number of voters and additional wards in 1883.
1884-1915 (4 sections), wards split, streets given in alphabetical order, then by house number
These registers came to me as approximately 14 bookshelf feet of books. They were scanned over a long period and then OCRd. I wrote a heap of software to detect and correct errors and then asked Lin Duke if she would have a look at doing the boring job of proof reading the outputs of my software. This she did! There are well over 2,500,000 entries in these registers! I then wrote more software to detect problems with the original data such as Pembroke road instead of Pembroke street etc., the software also checked the voting number sequences.

Missing from these pages are the lists of voters who were lodgers (less than 1% of the voters), this is because the format of these is totally different to the rest of the registers and the software involved became too complex for it to be worth my while to continue with it.

Roads, streets, avenues, terraces, folds, squares etc.

As there is interest in the location of the relevant roads/streets/places etc. given in the registers, I tried to find the location of the nearly 2,900 items within the Borough of Bradford. I managed 2,800 of these but there are still some I cannot find - there's a list of these below, can you help?

Terraces: these have been hard work! Terraces can be either the name of a road, or a terrace of houses in a road (Leeds road in particular).
Sometimes

The registers from 1884 onwards are divided into Wards and then streets/roads etc. I have linked each of these streets/roads(where known) to the National Library of Scotland's maps. When you click on a link it will take you to the relevant position on both the 25" map from the early 1900s and the Bing Hybrid modern satellite view of the same area. Some of the roads etc. are not marked on either map, but the position is correct (for instance those now buried under what was Midland Station).
The centre of the map you will see is on the third letter of the name of the road/street (give or take 5 metres on the ground) and so if you mark the position of a known street (I used a felt tip pen) then you will be able to locate places not named on the maps.
Be aware that you can change the maps and that the mouse scroll wheel will zoom you in and out.

This list contains all of the streets/roads etc. (inlcuding links to the maps) in the registers within the Borough of Bradford (as at 1915), including those below that I cannot find.

The list of Bradford street/road names that I can't find:
All of the street/road names below are mentioned in the Voting Registers for Bradford between 1853 and 1915.
I have found the location of over 2,800 of these, but try as I might, I can't find any of those below.
A lot of them are mentioned in the Post Office directories street index, but not in the trade directory section. Where mentioned, I have added the road/street name.
If you know or can find any of these, please let me have a grid ref or a map image showing it/them.
The name needs to be precise - for instance I need West Squire lane and not Squire lane (though they may actually be one and the same).
All of these are in Bradford borough area as it was in 1915.
Please drop me a line if you can help via the contact link at the bottom of the page.
Many thanks, Colin Hinson.
