BRADFORD VOTING REGISTERS:
Bradford Voting Registers notes

Source=h:/!Genuki/RecordTranscriptions/WRY/VotingRegisters2Index.txt

Notes on the presentation of the Bradford 1920-1937 Voting Registers.

These Registers are in a totally different format to the 1853-1915 Voting Registers:

The wards are split into Districts, then streets are given in alphabetical order, and then by house number,
The house numbers are normally given by even numbers ascending, then by odd numbers descending.
There are symbols given with some of the names, these symbols are:
  • § = Not entitled to vote in respect of that entry in the case of a Local Government election.
  • * = will vote at another polling place at Parliamentary Elections.
  • ~ = absent voter
  • # = Juror
  • ## = Special Juror.
In the columns for the franchises, there are letters representing Qualification data for the voter:
  • 1920 to 1926
    • R = Residential
    • BP = Business Premises
    • O = Occupational
    • HO = through Husbands Occupation
    • NM = Naval or Military Voter
  • 1930 to 1937
    • R = Residence
    • B = Business
    • O = Occupation
    • D = through spouses Occupation
    • w is appended for women
    • NM = Naval or Military Voter
These registers came to me as approximately 10 bookshelf feet of books. These are being processed when I have the time - it takes about a week full time to process one book. I am missing 1921 Spring East and the whole years 1927, 1928 and 1929. I wrote a heap of software to detect and correct errors and then wrote more software to detect problems with the original data such as Pembroke road instead of Pembroke street etc., the software also checked the voting number sequences and the house number sequencing.

Roads, streets, avenues, terraces, folds, squares etc.

As there is interest in the location of the relevant roads/streets/places etc. given in the registers, I have made a list of these. These are given in alphabetical order and then by Ward alphabetical order. Some of these streets/roads etc changed wards from time to time, and this results in some duplication. Some of these streets etc. I cannot locate and these are given in RED in the list - can you help with the location of these ? The locations of the streets I know of have are linked to side by side maps/satellite views from the National Library of Scotland, When you click on a link it will take you to the relevant position on both the 25" map from the early 1900s and the Bing Hybrid modern satellite view of the same area. Some of the roads etc. are not marked on either map, but the position is correct (for instance those now buried under what was Midland Station).
The centre of the map you will see is on the third letter of the name of the road/street (give or take 5 metres on the ground) and so if you mark the position of a known street (I used a felt tip pen) then you will be able to locate places not named on the maps.
Be aware that you can change the maps and that the mouse scroll wheel will zoom you in and out.

Terraces: these have been hard work! Terraces can be either the name of a road, or a terrace of houses in a road (Leeds road in particular).
Sometimes!

This list contains all of the streets/roads etc. (including links to the maps) in the registers within the Borough of Bradford (as at 1937), it also includes the names of those below that I cannot find.

The list of Bradford street/road names that I can't find:
All of the street/road names below are mentioned in the Voting Registers for Bradford between 1920 and 1937.
Try as I might, I can't find any of those below.
A lot of them are mentioned in the Post Office directories street index, but not in the trade directory section.
Where mentioned, I have added the road/street name from these directories.
If you know or can find any of these, please let me have a grid ref or a map image showing it/them.
The name needs to be precise!
All of these are in Bradford borough area as it was 1920 to 1937.
Please drop me a line if you can help via the contact link at the bottom of the page.
Many thanks, Colin Hinson.
