The place:

A parish town, in the wapentake of Barkston Ash, Liberties of St. Peter, and Honour of Pontefract; 1 mile from Ferrybridge, 3 from Pontefract, 8¼ from Aberford, 11 from Selby, 12 from Tadcaster, 22 from York. Population 1,491. The Church, a peculiar of the Dean and Chapter of York, is a vicarage, dedicated to St. Edward, in the deanery of the Ainsty.
