The place:

A parish town, in the lower division of Claro, Liberty of Knaresborough; 2½ miles from Knaresborough, 5½ from Boroughbridge, 7 from Ripon, 20 from York. Population 141. The Church is a perpetual curacy, in the deanery of Boroughbridge, diocese of Chester.
