Geographical and Historical information from the year 1835.

"FEWSTON, a parish in the lower division of the wapentake of CLARO, West riding of the county of YORK, comprising the townships of Blubberhouses, Clifton with Norwood, Fewston, Thurcross, and Great Timble, and containing 1989 inhabitants, of which number, 610 are in the township of Fewston, 7 miles N.W. from Otley. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the peculiar jurisdiction of the court for the honour of Knaresborough, rated in the king's books at £5, endowed with £200 royal bounty, and in the patronage of the Crown. The church is dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene."

"CLIFTON, a township, joint with Norwood, in the parish of FEWSTON, lower division of the wapentake of CLARO, West riding of the county of YORK, 6 miles {N. by E.) from Otley, containing, with Norwood, 40 inhabitants. Clifton is within the jurisdiction of the court of the honour of Knaresborough. A school is endowed with a small annuity for the instruction of eight poor children."


"GREAT TIMBLE, a township in the parish of FEWSTON, lower division of the wapentake of CLARO, West riding of the county of YORK, 5 miles N.W. from Otley, containing 233 inhabitants. It is within the peculiar jurisdiction of the Honour court of Knaresborough."
