Geographical and Historical information from the year 1834.

"HIGH HOYLAND, is a small township and village, in the parish of its name, in the wapentake of Staincross, about 6 miles n. of Penistone, and 5.5 n.w. from Barnsley. The parish church, which stands a little above the village, is an ancient structure, dedicated to St Mary : the living is a rectory, in the gift of T.W.Beaumont, Esq. and incumbency of the Rev. Richard Bird. Population of the parish in 1831, 1,118 and the township 231 of that number.

"SKELMANTHORPE, is a populous township and village, in the parishes of High Hoyland and Silkstone; This also is a place dependent upon its manufactures, which comprise woollen cloth and fancy goods. The only place of worship is a chapel, belonging to the Wesleyan methodists. Population returned with Cumberworth, in Silkstone parish.

"WEST CLAYTON, is a township, in the parish of High Hoyland, and wapentake of Staincross, 7 miles n.w. from Barnsley. The manufacture of fancy stuff goods prevail in this township. The calvinists have a place of worship here. The township contained in 1831, 887 persons.
