The place:

A parish town, in the wapentake of Osgoldcross, Liberty of Pontefract; 8 miles from Pontefract, 9 from Barnsley, 10 from Doncaster, 11 from Wakefield, 31 from York. Population 633. The Church is a vicarage, dedicated to All Saints, in the deanery of Doncaster.
