Humphrey Bamburgh, son of Thomas Bamburgh, of Howsham, by Katherine Thimbleby, of Poleham, co. Linc. ; and younger brother of Sir William Bamburgh, of Howsham, Knight and Baronet, my ancestor, was married to .... Cooke before 1612. See Foster, p. 85. He was living 1624, and had £20. a year under his brother's will. In 1627, Sept. 22, he is described as of Acklam. His son and heir Thomas had a legacy under the will of his aunt, Mary, Viscountess Fairfax, and was living in 1642. Humphrey Bamburgh's brother, Thomas, was dead in 1622, leaving issue William and Ellen. Probably the lady applied for the license, and so her name appears first; or the Clerk in the Spiritual Court got drunk on the joyous occasion, and "could not tell t'other from which."

[Thomas] Herbert, of Belthorp, and Mary dau. of Marmaduke Sothaby, of York, by Isabel Newton. Foster, p. 170. Mr. Thomas Herbert baptized a son William, 23 Feb. 1611-2; and a son John, 25 April, 1615, at Pocklington.

(57)
Richard Wake and Ursula Foster married 6 August, 1610. Westow Parish Register This licence is a proof that Kirkham parish church was still standing. From the Arch- bishop's Visitation Book we know that it was - intact in 1640, when Thomas Slingsby, who was not vicar of the adjoining church of Westow, was curate.
(58)
1610, August 7. Robert Crompton and Jane Culverwell, married at Cherry Burton. She was daughter to Rev. Samuel Culverwell, rector of that parish, buried there 20 May, 1613.

(60)
John Bright, M .A., vicar of Sheffield, 1634, married Joan Smales. But as he was baptized 17 January, 1594-5, this is more likely to have been a second wife of his uncle John Bright of Banner Cross, whose first wife's name seems to be unknown, though she had eight children, born before 1608.
(61)
John Crosland, of Helmsley (buried 30 Nov. 1655), and Jane Atkinson, of Little Cattail, buried 29 Nov, 1657, at Helmsley, where their first child Elizabeth was baptized, 15 January, 1611-2, and married 16 January, 1626-7, Charles Tancred, of Arden. Their eldest son, Jordan, was baptized 30 Dec. 1618, and died 1670. See Dugdale's Visitation, 1665, Surtees Society, p, 133.
(62)
Dorothy Austwick of Pontefract. See Dugdale's Visitation, 1665. Surtees Society, p. 23.
(63)
1626, Aug. 10, Stephen Pimperton, buried at Elvington.
(64)
William Warcop (probably of the Appleby branch of Warcop of Warcop), married 15 Sept. 1610, at Heversham, co. Westm., Triphena, eldest daughter of John Mallory, of Studley, by Ann, dau. of William Lord Eure. She was baptized 10 August, 1583, and had issue. From her great-aunts Anne Ingilby and Elizabeth Stapleton I have the honour to descend. The Stephana, called her sixth sister in Foster, p. 157, could. hardly have been married before 1612 to .... Warcop.

Thomas Talbot, of Thornton-le-Street, and Anne, dau. of James Ward of Rookwith, parish of Thornton Watlass, who died 1635. Dugdale's Visitation, 1665, Surtees Society, p. 241, makes a mistake of two years in the date of his death. He was buried at St. Michael-le- Belfry, York, 27 December, 1655. His son Francis was baptized 29th .... 1013, at Thornton-le-Street. Besides the four children given, Thomas Talbot had Susanna and Michael, who died young in 1616 and 1623.
(66)
Gabriel Layton, of Barrowby, and Mary, dau. of Francis Arthington, of Castley. They had a son Gabriel, one year in 1612. Foster p. 273.

(71)
John Routh and Susanna Lee married at Hatfield, 29 February, 1610-1. He was son of Richard Routh, of Pollington, by Frances Ricard, of Heck. Baptized 18 April, 1585, buried 21 May, 1663, at Snaith, where his wife was buried, 27 April, 1627, See Hunter's South Yorkshire, 1. p. 177, to which the following additions may be made from the parish register of Hatfield. She was daughter of Henry Lee, alias Waring, by Elizabeth, dau. of William Fletcher, of Campsall, married 9 June, 1584, and buried 13 February, 1623-4. Susanna Routh's brother, Robert Lee, was buried 28 July, 1659 his wife, Frances Lenthall, 5 Sept. 1655. Her nephew, Cornelius Lee, was buried 20 January, 1701-2, As he was baptized only on 1st May, 1629, he must have been a very young and perfectly useless " Cornet of Horse in the King's Army in the Civil Wars," as he described himself; for the poor puppet king had no army after 1646 Probably he was like many others, who made themselves out to be martyrs, when they had never " suffered" at all, of whom Anthony Wood speaks.

William Wilkinson, of Astley, married Jennet, daughter of Henry Savile, of Methley (Foster, p. 571). I am inclined to believe, as in the case of No. 223, Cooke and Bamburgh, that if the lady's friends and herself applied for the licence, her name took precedence of her future husband. Should any person think it unlikely that the woman would apply for the licence and sign the bond, I affirm that the year 1857 I granted a licence under these circumstances, as Surrogate, (which office I still hold) of the peculiar jurisdiction of Snaith, C.B.N.
