The Scotch were just beginning to find the London road " the finest prospect in Great Britain." But it may be allowed to a descendant of the "Clan Donochie" to enquire whether "Mackbriar" be not a mistake for " Macbride," or an Irish "Maguire?"

Persons of both names were owners of land in Campsall, but no such marriage is to be found in South Yorkshire, 11., p. 464, nor in Foster, pp. 306, 307. The lady must have been mother of George St. Paul (aged 2,1555, died 1644), whose estate Bartholomew Fletcher afterwards bought, and died in 1636.

Probably Peter Dolman (Qu. youngest son of Sir Robert Dolman, Knight, of Pocklington, by Eleanor Mallory?) who certainly married Elizabeth, widow of the Rev. John Watson of Hutton Bushell, son of John Watson, of Cambridge, and daughter of the Rev. Richard Remington, D.D., Rector of Lockington, by Elizabeth, daughter of Arch- bishop Matthew Hutton. Her third husband was William Hungate, of North Dalton. Her daughter, Ann Watson, married the Rev. Ralph Dolman, Rector of Everingham (fourth cousin of Peter), and had a daughter and heiress, Mary, who in 1628, married Marmaduke Norcliffe, of Oswaldkirk.

A further note about this from Jean-Louis Barbry (October 2004):
I think he is Peter Dolman, of Kilpin, co. York, and of Gray's Inn, 1584, son of Thomas Dolman (by VAVASOUR, Elisabeth), Esq., of Pocklington, aged 23, 38 Henry 8 (inq. p.m.) J.P. 1584, buried at Pocklington 31 March, 1589, M.I. will dated 25 March, 1589, and proved at York.

Took place 31 Aug. 1612.

(20)
Was this Martin Flathers, of Leathley, whose daughter Agnes married Thomas Ferrand, of West Hall, aet. 63, 1665 ? Dugdale's Visitation, p. 27. Vicar of Weston, 1587-1627.

Daughter of the Rev. Richard Remington.
(27)
Richard Scott and Elizabeth Mosley, married 8 Nov. 1612, St. John's, York. his first wife. Afterwards Sir Richard Scott, Knight. Hallamshire. p. 262. Foster, p. 555.
(28)
Stephen Tempest, of Broughton, and Susan, dau. and co-heir of William Oglethorpe, of Roundhay, first wife and mother of his ten or eleven children, according to Sir William Dugdale (Surtees Society's Edition, p. 360), who says the second wife died without issue. On what evidence Foster 's Yorkshire Pedigrees makes Sir Stephen Tempest, Knight, and his brother Thomas, issue of the second wife. Frances, dau. of Sir Cotton Gargrave, I cannot even guess. But I apprehend Sir Stephen, who did not die till after 1070, five years after the date of the Visitation, and. presumably, lived till 1678, knew his mother's name, and entered it correctly.
(28)
a If daughter of Edmund, third Baron Sheffield, Lord-President of the North, K.G., Earl of Mulgrave, this must have been her first husband, for she is said to have married George Verney, Esq.

Possibly an ancestor of the well-known Archdeacon William Paley. See Whitaker's Craven, 1812, pp. 140. 141, 145. There was a William Paley, of Knight Stainforth, who had a son Richard, dead 1642, and a grandson William, found heir to his grandfather. by Inq. p. m. 18 Charles I., and then a minor. Also a Thomas Paley, of Paley Green, parish of Giggleswick, who made his will 8 June, .1657, naming his son and heir Thomas, who had issue, his son Robert, who had issue, his daughter Anne, to whom he gave £70, and £5 apiece to his daughters Agnes and Ellen.
(30)
See Poulson's Holderness, II. p. 18, for a specimen of some twenty falsehoods contained in ten lines. Robert Medley, LL.B., St. John's Coll., Cambridge, 1674, married 25 November, 1619, at St. Olave's, York, Dorothy; daughter of William Grimston, Esq., by his second wife. Margaret Strickland. She was buried 6 August, 1691. and he 3 January, 1708-9, at St. Michael's-le-Belfrey, York. He was not a Proctor of the Court of York, as Poulson states, but a barrister, and a civilian; and Queen Mary, as the term is commonly understood, the Queen of England-died in 1558. His only son was Henry Medley, Post Captain, Royal Navy, 17 February, 1720, Admiral 1744, died in Vado Bay, 5 August, 1747. By his will dated 2 August, 1747, three days before his death, he bequeathed his real estate (ut asseritur) to his Grimston relations, of the half blood, excluding his own nephew and niece, John and Dorothy Kilvington, the legitimate issue of his sister of the whole blood. His wife was Ann Gouge, married 29 November, 1713, at York Minster, daughter and heir of Nathaniel Gouge, of Hull, by Dorothy, daughter of William Grimston and Dorothy daughter of Sir Thomas Norcliffe, Knight. They were married at Langton 4 Nov. 1684. She was buried at St. Mary's, Hull, 24 July, 1700; he, 17 June, 1705.
