Thomas Layton, of Sexhow, and Mary wrongly called Katherine on p: 39 of Foster's Visitations, and given without a Christian name at all on p. 540 of the same work), daughter of Thomas Fairfax, of Gilling, Viscount Elmley, and sister- of the Honble. Dorothy, Lady Norcliffe. I cannot find that this Thomas was ever knighted, although he has been styled so by modem writers on Cleveland (one more foolish than the other). who have. taken the word "Kent" for "Knight." Rev. John Graves. Cleveland, 1808, pp. 172, 173, does not dub Mr. Layton a Knight. They were a young couple, for he was not 15 in 1612, and she was baptized at Gilling.29 Feb. 1600--1.
(41)
Took place at York, 10 June. 1613.
(42)
